Hide general information
The main objective of the research is to improve the maintenance and the safety of suspension bridges and other similar suspended structures by creating a specific cable made of individually protected strand (such as the strands which are used today on cable stayed bridges such as the Normandie bridge) but with a tight bond between the polyethylene cover and the strand. This will permit the transfer of tangential force at each collar connecting the hangers to the suspension cable. In fact, this problem came in to light during the last 10 years: extensive rehabilitation programs have started in several countries. The existing problems cover all suspended bridges in the world and no solutions or structural repair is possible rather than complicate and expensive maintenance: these works request the dismantling of the old corroded huge cables. In most of the case, the old technology does not permit to maintain the traffic on the bridge. This is a big concern for the Owners and the Users. The proposed system will be much more flexible and could be easily installed and maintained later on without traffic interruption. The aim of the research project is to develop prototypes of new protected cables and specific steel collar and test them to achieve the definition of these new products.
