The European engineering sector is worth ?3,000 Bn with 375,000 companies, 90% of which are SMEs, providing over 20 million jobs. The sector has been under intense pressure from the Far-East, stifling economic competitiveness through low labour costs. Con sequently the number of SME engineering firms has reduced by 20% in the last 5 years. Further pressures have arisen from tightening environmental legislation in the EU. This sector must respond if it is to survive. Over 75% of workshops use water miscible metalworking fluids (MWFs) as an integral part of metal machining. It is has been calculated that about 16% of metal manufacturing costs are attributed to MWFs. About 3,200 million litres of spent MWF are disposed of per annum and if the MWFs are not pro perly handled they create health concerns for operators (dermatitis/asthma). Currently the engineering sector has a very limited understanding of MWF management, including lifespan and disposal. As IAGs we represent and understand the needs of our large S ME membership base. We aim to develop a total MWF monitoring, optimisation & disposal advisory system to extend fluid life by at least double. It will involve the development of innovative MWF concentration & bio-activity sensors plus a sophistica ted software algorithm defining the inter-relationships between pH, concentration and bio-activity. The technology will help reduce production costs through reduced fluid purchase & disposal costs. It will also contribute to improved machining, enviro nmental and health & safety performances, compliance with EU environmental legislation and general up-skilling of the large SME engineering family. The combination of innovative RTD providers developing the scientific and technical capability, core SME s to manufacture the products and IAGs to disseminate and train, bought together within the Collective Instrument, is the best mechanism to deliver a solution to the 253,000 European engineering SMEs that use MWFs
