Although hardness measured by indentation techniques is a useful design parameter, it is inadequate in situations where a surface engineered system experiences repeated loading or impacting conditions in operation, e.g., cutting and forming tools. The proposed programme will involve the design, manufacture and evaluation of two types of novel indentation instruments for the property evaluation of various surface engineering systems. It is foreseen that demonstration instruments and associated control software will be outputs of the research. The prime industrial/economic objectives are: - To improve the reliability of surface engineered engineering components operating under impact conditions in manufacturing industry; - To increase the design awareness of the technical and economic benefits of single and duplex surface engineered systems. The RTD goals of the proposed programme are: - To develop a continuous load and depth recording instrument for the measurement of both coating adhesion and the load bearing capacity of surface engineered systems. - To develop a cyclic impact test machine for the evaluation of single and duplex surface engineered systems. - to structurally characterise a variety of surface engineered systems and correlate such data with their impact behaviour. - To simulate, model and develop software packages for the service behaviour of surface engineered systems under diverse impact loading conditions.
