The general objective is to assess the European of hot laboratories capacity and its aptitude for supporting the nuclear industrial and research community both at present and in the future. The ultimate goal is to preserve appropriate nuclear research infrastructure in Europe by combining the best available competences at the highest quality. The present HOTLAB project is to be looked at as a first step in the integration process. It will inventory the present research capabilities, in the form of an internet based highly dynamic permanent database, including the inter-laboratory transport facilities as well. An assessment of the present and future needs of nuclear research in terms of infrastructure facilities will complete the basis to build upon a common strategy for durable integration in the longer term.

The Reactor Pressure Vessel is an essential component liable to limit the lifetime duration of PWR power plants. Its behaviour in service is limited in time due to irradiation-induced embrittlement. The safety analyses performed at the European level do not take into account the effect of load history / warm pre-stress (WPS) of the defects. The SMILE project aims to give sufficient elements to demonstrate, to model and to validate the beneficial WPS effect. The objective is to propose a harmonised way of taking into account this generic phenomenon in the safety studies. It will permit a precise estimation of a potential fracture event, and would also allow plant life extension resulting in a long-term economic benefit.

The project is concerned with a benchmark exercise devoted to the evaluation and comparison of techniques for the assessment of a safety-related computer-based system embedded in a nuclear installation, with particular attention to the software part. In this project, the industrial partner will supply a reference case study and all the documentation needed to carry out the benchmark exercise, whilst the other partners will mainly contribute in reviewing known assessment techniques and in applying a subset of them to the case study commonly agreed by all the partners in the course of the project. Comparison criteria will be properly chosen and designed in order to carry out the evaluation and comparison of the involved techniques.

The transmutation using an accelerator-driven system (ADS) is a promising solution for reducing the amount of radioactive wastes to be disposed. Its practicability on an industrial scale requires to operate an experimental ADS (XADS). It is proposed to perform preliminary design studies of an European XADS in order to preliminary assess its feasibility, the safety and licensing issues, the needs of R&D in support, its cost, and then to consolidate its road mapping. Several options have already been considered by European Union members, and judged to be promising. The purpose of the proposal is to develop these design options to a level sufficient to perform objective comparisons for being capable to propose a European XADs concept. The preliminary design studies will be focused on the critical points of the accelerator, the spallation target unit and the reactor of the XADS concepts.

The Modular High Temperature Reactor (HTR) uses simplicity instead of economy-of-scale to attain economic viability, meaning elimination of safety relevant components incorporated in current nuclear plants, because of recognised inherent safety features. A common European safety approach for this reactor type will therefore be established and the feasibility of the licensing of such reactors will be evaluated. Key safety issues and accidental conditions, like fission product transport, air ingress and local core heat up, for this reactor type will be researched and classified. The confinement requirements, the equipment classification rules, and the parameters will be monitored and controlled will be established.
