The research interests of the RRG are in the determinants (genetic and pathophysiological) of progression and outcomes of primary renal disease and transplantation. Specifically, the research focuses on the interface between renal and cardiovascular diseases and in the determinants of accelerated CVD in these populations.
The renal research group conducts clinical studies on CV disease in patients with primary renal disease. In recent years we have studied vascular dysfunction and have used cardiac MRI (CMR) to redefine uraemic cardiomyopathy (UC). In laboratory-based studies we have investigated the role of Fc receptors and progression of IgA nephropathy and membrane-raft dependant signalling mechanisms in renal and CV diseases. The renal transplant unit in Glasgow plays a major role in international multicentre clinical trials of novel immunosuppressive agents and strategies and of CV interventions. |
