Further erosion of the industry has occurred due to the loss of sales to man - made fibres. A conservative estimate of the lost sales in Europe is in the region of 50 M ECU/ yr. In order to compete successfully the European companies are becoming increasingly dependent on the production of high quality value added products. However, the main problem arises because dyed leather generally has very poor fastness properties, particularly compared to some textile substrates. The aim of the proposed project is to improve significantly the colour fastness properties of dyed leathers; particularly with respect to colour transfer to adjacent materials. Colour transfer is a complex problem and has been shown to be caused by: - transfer of soluble dye - transfer of solid aggregates of dye - transfer of dyed leather fibre fragments The research programme will involve investigating the fundamental nature of this colour transfer in order that rational approaches to its improvement can be developed. Polymer technology will form the basis of the work to improve colour transfer by incorporating additional active sites into the leather to improve dye fixation, coating leather fibres to prevent dye migration and to strengthen the fibres against abrasion.Other areas of investigation will include optimising the dyeing process and an evaluation of the use of ultrasonics during dyeing to reduce aggregation of the dyestuff. Principles and processes developed will be tested by a series of wear trial. Source : cordis
