It is well accepted that automation of most processes brings about a threefold increase in production. Unfortunately, however this increase is often offset by a lack of operator intervention when a process loses control without detection and therefore subsequent warning or plant shutdown fails to take place. More specifically when automating welding processes it is recognised that there may still be some risk of defects. This is all truer in welding automation and robotisation where many companies have faced these problems. To fully exploit the potential of fully automated welding, it is clearly necessary that new methods be developed in order that data may be processed at real time rates and reliability of the full system is achieved. Several RTD projects have been carried out in Europe where this aspect has been addressed. Research groups in Europe, some of them involved in the network consortium, have achieved interesting results, which can improve welding production in industry. In this Implementation phase. Working groups will be created based on cluster subjects related with welding control and automatisation, which has resulted from a preliminary assessment of the problems and demands from different industrial sectors as well as from the actual state of the art on currently research, carried out during the Exploratory phase and existing technical support on this joining technology. Thematic working clusters will be the exchange of knowledge tool between research performers and industrial users, on the following topics: Welding Sensors; Welding simulation; Monitoring and Control Systems and Robot Systems. It is expected to promote and develop further research and use of control of joining technologies in industry and for industry, in order to increase the product performance and quality as well as the European competitiveness face to United States and Japan. Increase use of welding control means (e.g. sensors), new research projects, training, and staff exchange are some of the outcomes expected to achieve from the exchange of knowledge. Finally, a dissemination of the technological transfer is envisaged to other potential industrial end users. The present network is covered by the BRITE-EURAM Programme Areas 1.1, 2.2, 2.3.
