This proposal has been prepared in the framework of a research and development roadmap defined by the European rotorcraft community that aims to develop a civil tilt-rotor aircraft. A key target of the road map is a flying demonstrator in the 2010 decade. NICETRIP specifically addresses the acquisition of new knowledge and technology validation concerning tilt-rotor.The main project objectives are:- To validate the European civil tilt-rotor concept based on the ERICA architecture;- To validate critical technologies and systems through the development, integration and testing of components of a tilt-rotor aircraft on full-scale dedicated rigs;- To acquire new knowledge on tilt-rotor through the development and testing of several wind tunnel models, including a large-scale full-span powered model;- To investigate and evaluate the introduction of tilt-rotors in the European Air Traffic Management System;- To assess the sustainability of the tilt-rotor product with respect to social and environmental issue s and to define the path towards a future tilt-rotor flying demonstrator.Project NICETRIP is fully relevant to the strategic objective 1.3.2.1: - Integration of technologies towards the future tilt-rotor aircraft, of the work programme of call 3 of the Thematic Priority Aeronautics and Space. The organisation and resources proposed to achieve the project objectives include a 54-month work plan made of 7 work packages and a consortium of 31 participants, fully representing the span of needed capabilities.

CESAR focuses on small-size commercial aircraft providing manufacturers with an enhanced ability needed to become fully competitive in the world market. The objective is to build up a new development concept for this aircraft category and to improve selected technologies enabling a significant reduction of the time-to-market and lowering the overall development, operation and maintenance costs, while considering safety, passenger comfort and environmental impact. The project consists of five RTD areas sufficiently covering the complexity of the aircraft design process, namely aerodynamic and structural design, propulsion integration, aircraft system optimisation and design integration aspects. In particular CESAR aims at enhancing aerodynamic and structural design tools and structural evaluation methods. RTD work comprises development, validation and integration of design tools and methodologies to provide suitable environment for virtual aircraft simulation. Enhancement of design processes, knowledge management and collaboration tools is an essential part of the project. Another important part of the project is technological development for aircraft subparts and systems. The CESAR aspires to provide technologies and knowledge for advanced wing, competitive and environmentally acceptable propulsion unit and new technologies for selected aircraft systems to reduce aircraft operating costs and improve safety. The activities also include the integration of the latest technologies already applied to large commercial aircraft and their modified economical use within the category of small-size commercial aircraft, e.g. cost effective actuation, complex power-plant control system, competitive technologies for air systems, structural health monitoring and on condition maintenance systems. Validation is carried out on two levels: a) on the task level (hardware platforms), b) on the project level (two baseline a/c configurations for assessment and trade offs).

European aircraft industry demands for reduced development and operating costs, by 20% and 50% in the short and long term, respectively. COCOMAT contributes to this aim by reducing structural weight at safe design; it exploits considerable reserves in primary fibre composite fuselage structures by accurate and reliable simulation of collapse. Collapse is specified by that point of the load-displacement-curve where a sharp decrease occurs thus limiting the load carrying capacity. Right now collapse of aircraft structures cannot be simulated with sufficient reliability, leading to over-conservative designs.More reliable determination requires knowledge of degradation due to static as well as low cycle loading in the post-buckling range. Improved slow and fast simulation tools as well as design guidelines for stiffened panels are needed which take skin stringer separation and material degradation into account. Reliable fast tools reducing design and analysis time by an order of magnitude, will allow for an economic design process, whereas very accurate but necessarily slow tools are required for the final certification. The project will deliver both types of tools, ready for industrial application. Industry brings in experience with design and manufacture of real shells; research contributes knowledge on testing and on development of simulation tools. Design guidelines are defined in common, and the developed tools are validated by industry.The results comprise a substantially extended data base on material properties and on collapse of undamaged and pre-damaged statically and low cyclically loaded structures, degradation models, improved slow and fast computation tools as well as design guidelines. The knowledge, the experience, the results and especially the fast tools of the running FP 5 project POSICOSS form an excellent basis for COCOMAT and allow to start work at a very high level. Urgent industrial need is manifested by involvement of eight companies.

The objective of the proposed research is to achieve a leap improvement in aircraft reliability through the application of smart materials. There exists an acute need to develop the capability to monitor aircraft structural health in real-time, in a reliable manner. Real-time structural health monitoring will not only improve the overall safety but will also made it possible to replace Corrective or Preventive maintenance modes with much more efficient Predictive or Proactive maintenance procedures- thus reducing the associated cost. Similarly, vibrations and noise levels are still to high in certain aircraft. Systems based on smart materials defined as solid-state actuators activated by external fields, e.g., electric or magnetic, can address all these factors. Smart materials have already reached a sufficient level of maturity to benefit from their unique characteristics not only in laboratory but also in an industrial environment. No moving parts, the ease of integration with metallic and composite structures and the capability to provide distributed actuation are among their most important characteristics. This project will take advantage on an extensive body of knowledge accumulated during nearly two decades of development of smart materials and their applications. The proposed project will give a final push to produce realistic industrial solutions for real-time structural health monitoring and aircraft vibrations reduction. The most promising methods will be tested on large-scale specimens, such as a portion of a commuter aircraft fuselage. Project goals will be achieved by a network consisting of several production companies, research institutes and universities. The know-how developed as a part of this project is ideal to stimulate creation and development of small, high-tech enterprises.

Today's helicopters need to be improved further with respect to environmental and public acceptance. Helicopters generate external noise, cabin noise and vibration due to the complex nature of their dynamic systems and suffer from NOx emission; like other transport systems. It is therefore very essential that the new generation rotorcraft adress these issues to improve the situation, to make them environmentally friendly and acceptable to the general public The modern society needs this indispensable system due to its ability to fly medical, rescue and law enforcement missions. These missions require flight profiles close to populated areas. Hence, a number of enhancements appears mandatory. In detail, the following goals are envisaged: - External noise levels 10 db below the current ICAO/JAA rules especially during approach, - A reduction of fuel consumption up to 20 % for high speed flights. - Cabin noise levels below 70 dBA similar to airliner cabins for normal cruise flight, - Cabin vibrations below 0,05 g corresponding to jet smooth ride comfort for the same flight regime. Because of the large and fast rotating rotor, the non-symmetric rotor flow, the close vicinity of main gearbox and passenger position and the specific requests of engine performance, the targets mentioned above are highly challenging. In order to comply with the research objectives, an extreme high tech initiative is required, enabling however European aeronautic industry to hold their own against international competitors. In order to do so, short and long term objectives are planned targeting the following technology topics: - Short Term objectives: Noise Abatement Flight Procedures, Cabin Noise Reduction Engine Noise Reduction - Long Term Objectives Active Blade Control The activities envisaged in Friendcopter are to provide a number of key deliverables.
